Question by caligrrl: Am I still married? And how do I file for uncontested divorce online if my ex and I live in different states?
My ex-husband and I were only married about a year. We got married in a state neither of us currently live in. We have now been separated since 1999, a year after we got married. At one point he filed for divorce and sent me the docs; I signed and notarized them and sent them back. Apparently he moved and said he never got them and says we are still married.
I need to get this divorce handled asap as I am engaged to someone else and he wants to put me on his insurance in a few weeks. He also does not know about this situation and thinks I am divorced. My questions are: a) Is there some public registry where I can find out if indeed we ARE still officially married? b) He lives in one state, I live in another, and we got married in a complete other state. Do I have to file in the state that we were married in? c) Are there any low cost reputable online divorce sites other than LegalZoom, which is not low cost?
A friend of mine is married to an Iraqi woman in September 28, 2007 in Ankara Turkey and stayed together for 10days after marriage. He went back to US and the wife went back to Iraq. They don’t have children together and now they both decide to file a divorce because their marriage is irretrievably broken. They don’t have property together. They are considered divorce in Islamic way. But they need the divorce that will be honored in US government. They both want to move on.

I am from bangalore n working in Dubai. I had been dating this american women from Dec 2008. we had not committed each other n we had been going along well n were good friends. but we knew that we had feelings for eachother. I liked her, but was not sure whether she liked me too. she knew that my parents were keen to get me married. but I wasn’t ready n always refused to. meanwhile she got a job in Qatar n accepted it. just before going on vacation we both had a small fight n argument. so I thought it was over n move on from there.
I came to India in July. my parents forced me to get married to this Muslim girl. I wasn’t very keen n happy. my married life wasn’t going well. we had difference of opinions n she was immature. we quarrel n argue each other. my 2 months vacations became hell.
What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California
I have been with my boyfriend for over a year and he is currently legally married (he’s 36 she’s 34 – married 17 years and very young) he has been separated (not legally) for over 2 years after they lost their house (he was the sole income provider) they have 3 boys, which he gives her $1500 every month without fail and see’s his boys 2-5 times a week, gets them on the weekends and the youngest practically lives with him. He makes 60,000 a year and she has been working for over 2 years (not sure what her income is), we want to move in together and get married. He is a very hard worker and an amazing father to his son’s and aside from the support he buys all their clothes, shoes and anything that they need. He wants to start the divorce because I refuse to move in with him since he’s legally married. But now that I have been searching online about divorce maybe it’s better to leave the situation as is. How much alimony/spousal support and for how long would the California Law make him pay his wife? Also he has saved all receipts for his Child Support paid to her for the past 26 months. Does anyone know how much more he would have to pay her?
I appreciate your help or any advice I just don’t want him to get the divorce to add any stress since he had a stroke last year died and came back, but has a hospital job with great benefits for himself and his kids. But she has been trying to get back with him for the last year and showed up to his job and hit him after he asked her to leave and he had to call security to escort her out.
I heard that in Quebec, couples absolutely need to go about filing a divorce through a lawyer, is that true? Can married couples in Quebec divorce without a lawyer?
A response to the Fat Aussie Barstard – My apologies for the quality – I’m still getting used to all this new laptop stuff and quite frankly – I have no idea how to change up my cam settings to up the quality LOL
Nobody wants to deal with the stress of a divorce, but sometimes it’s necessary if you want to move on. At the end of the day, only you and your partner can decide, because you know what your circumstances are.
Sometimes you can be so involved with everything going on that it’s hard to see things clearly. Try to step back and see things from a different perspective. It’s important to carefully consider what a divorce will mean to you and your children, if you have any.
my ex and I split up, it was a mutual decision. long story short, we want a divorce.. but someone told me that since him and i dont have any children, or property, or n ne thing like that. that we could just get a dissolution instead. well i was also told that if i want a divorce i’d have to get the papers from the state we were married in. but other friends of mine have gotten divorces online…so what do i do? how do i go about this?
thanks guys..he wont contest. so once the papers get to him, then he just signs..and mails back in? now i dont have to go to court do i?
yeah we lived in florida for half the time, and texas the other half. and we were only married for like a year n half. well we’re still legally married obviously. but ive lived up here for 8 months now. and how much do court fees cost?!?!
